Leading UK Climate Change Research Insitutions

This page highlights some of the key academic and government institutions that are leaders in the field of climate change research in the UK. As mentioned in the 'Project Team' section of this website, project partners include Climate Change Risk Management and the Met Office Hadley Centre, which is part-funded by the UK government. The Hadley Centre's particular focus is on developing climate models to better understand the physical, biological and chemical processes involved, as well as attributing recent changes to specific factors.
The following list provides a brief summary of key institutions whose work is of potential relevance to this project:
British Antarctic Survey (BAS)
The BAS leads UK research in Antarctica and the surrounding islands in the South Atlantic. Eight major research programs are being undertaken in Antarctica in order to increase the understanding of climate forcings and associated feedbacks within the climate system through long-term monitoring programmes. Examples of two relevant programs are:
- Climate and Chemistry: forcings, feedbacks and phasings in the Earth System (CACHE)
- Glacial Retreat in Antarctica and Deglaciation of the Earth System (GRADES)
Climatic Research Unit (CRU)
CRU is an internationally recognised research institution linked to the University of East Anglia. The unit specialises in producing climatic datasets. CRU produces an internationally utilised record of global temperatures and until recently ran the IPCC Data Distribution Centre.

Environmental Change Institute (ECI) at Oxford University
The research undertaken at ECI focuses on global and regional projects that link the interaction between natural and social sciences. Climate, Energy and Ecosystems are the three main areas of research, and the institute also hosts the UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP) http://www.ukcip.org.uk/. The aim of UKCIP is to inform businesses and organisations about how they might be affected by climate change.

Grantham Institute for Climate change, Imperial College London
Newly formed in February 2007, the Grantham Institute has a goal to deliver and communicate sustainable technological, political and socio-economic responses to climate change. It is therefore a multidisciplinary research centre concentrating on:
- Earth Systems Science
- Vulnerable Ecosystems and Human Welfare
- Sustainable Futures
- Risks, Extremes and Irreversible Change

Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research
Research at the Tyndall Centre is carried out by professionals from a range of backgrounds. These include scientists, economists, engineers and social scientists. This trans-disciplinary research is governed by several advisory and management councils which enable different views and guidance to influence the work. The overall aim of the work is to deliver sustainable responses to climate change. The focus is on issues such as:
- Informing international climate policy
- Constructing energy futures
- Building resilience to climate change
Walker Institute for Climate Change, University of Reading
The University of Reading has expertise in physical climate processes such as oceanography, atmospheric modelling and meteorology. The Walker Institute brings together climate related research at Reading and aims to further research in climate-system science. Work is linked closely to the Met Office Hadley Centre and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science.
